Codeine Phosphate

Codeine phosphate is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid analgesics. It is derived from the opium poppy plant and is used primarily for its pain-relieving properties. Codeine phosphate is commonly prescribed to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain.

When taken orally, codeine phosphate is converted to morphine in the body, which acts on opioid receptors in the central nervous system to reduce pain perception. It can also have a cough-suppressing effect and is sometimes used in cough medications.

Codeine phosphate is available in various forms, including tablets, capsules, and liquid solutions. It is usually prescribed in combination with other medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, to enhance its pain-relieving effects.

It’s important to note that codeine phosphate is a controlled substance due to its potential for abuse and addiction. It can cause side effects such as drowsiness, constipation, nausea, and respiratory depression, especially when taken in higher doses or for a prolonged period. Therefore, it should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional and according to the prescribed dosage and duration.

It is commonly prescribed for the management of moderate to moderately severe pain, such as that caused by injury, surgery, or certain medical conditions. It is often used in combination with other medications, such as paracetamol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), to enhance its analgesic effects.

It’s important to note that codeine phosphate is a controlled substance due to its potential for misuse, dependence, and addiction. Prolonged or excessive use of codeine can lead to physical and psychological dependence. Therefore, it is typically prescribed for short-term use and closely monitored by healthcare professionals.

Therapeutic indications

acetaminophen and codeine phosphate

Codeine phosphate is indicated for:
• the relief of mild to moderate pain (including pain associated with terminal
illness, post-operative pain, headache),
• the relief of symptoms of diarrhea (except diarrhea caused by poisoning).

Dose and method of administration

Codeine phosphate may be given orally in doses of 15 mg – 60 mg every 4 – 6 hours
as needed.
If these doses fail to relieve pain, larger doses rarely succeed and may give rise to
restlessness and excitement.

The maximum daily dose in adults should not exceed 300 mg.

Do not use in children aged less than 12 years
The usual pediatric dose is 0.5 mg per kg of body weight, every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
The total dose should not exceed 240 mg in 24 hours. The duration of treatment should
not normally exceed 3 days.

Like other opioids, codeine phosphate can cause side effects,

  • drowsiness,
  • constipation,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • dizziness, and respiratory depression.

It is essential to use codeine phosphate as prescribed and not exceed the recommended dosage to minimize the risk of adverse reactions.

Codeine phosphate has specific precautions and contraindications, and its use may not be suitable for everyone. It may interact with other medications, alcohol, or certain medical conditions, so it’s important to inform your healthcare provider about your medical history and any other medications you are taking.

acetaminophen and codeine phosphate

Acetaminophen and codeine phosphate is a combination medication commonly prescribed for the relief of moderate to moderately severe pain. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer, while codeine phosphate is an opioid analgesic.

When used together, acetaminophen and codeine work synergistically to provide pain relief. Acetaminophen works by reducing the production of pain-causing chemicals in the body, while codeine acts on the central nervous system to alter the perception of pain.

It’s important to note that codeine is an opioid and can be habit-forming. It carries a risk of dependence, tolerance, and potential misuse. Therefore, this medication should be used only as prescribed by a healthcare professional and for the shortest duration necessary.

Acetaminophen and codeine combination products are available in various strengths and formulations. The specific dosage and frequency of administration will depend on the individual’s pain severity, medical history, and response to the medication. It’s crucial to follow the prescribed dosing instructions and consult with a healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication or its usage.
